How to pick the right credit card

A credit card is pretty much a necessity these days, almost everybody has one. Given the importance of a credit card it is really quite surprising how little thought most people put into them. Choosing the wrong credit card can cost you a lot of money so you really should be putting the effort into making sure that you get the right credit card to meet your needs.

Far and away the most important thing when you are picking a credit card is to make sure that you get the best possible interest rate. Since most people will carry a fairly large balance on their credit card the interest can really add up. Even a small difference in interest rates can cost you a lot of money. You definitely want to make sure that you shop around to be sure that you are getting the best rate that you can; it is by far the most important thing when it comes to credit cards.

One thing to keep in mind when you are comparing interest rates on credit cards is to make sure that you watch out for introductory rates. Most credit card companies offer a low introductory rate in order to attract new customers. This can be a great way to save money but you have to be careful. In a few months that introductory rate will be replaced by the regular rate, if it is higher than the rate that you could have gotten from another card then it really wasn't a good deal to go with the low introductory rate.

The next thing that you are going to want to look at when you are choosing a credit card is the fees that come with the card. There are lots of credit cards out there that have no fees and in general you are better off sticking with one of those cards. However in some cases you may find that you can get a better deal if you take a card that does come with fees. This is especially true if you are able to get a better interest rate on the card by paying a monthly fee, as long as the fee isn't too high it may be good idea.

Most credit cards these days offer some sort of rewards program and this can be a great benefit. That being said you have to be careful to make sure that in choosing the reward card you aren't paying a higher interest rate. A lot of people focus on the reward and don't pay attention to the interest rate which is far more important. You are also going to want to make sure that the reward that is offered is something that you will actually benefit from. If you never travel an air miles card is probably not all that useful.
